Communicating Science: Strategies for Public Engagement

Statistics and Data Science Communication: Tips and Tricks for a New Model of Engagement (303928)

*Regina Nuzzo, Gallaudet University

Keywords: communication, engagement, audience

Communication skills have never been more important for statisticians and data scientists than they are today. We are increasingly called upon to engage with a variety of audiences — policymakers, journalists, funders, decision makers, the public, experts in other fields, and others — to help them understand and apply our work to their lives. Communication experts in other fields have developed an assortment of tools and tricks for engaging with audiences, many of which we can learn from and borrow. At the same time we can also create a new model of communication by developing strategies for our areas of strength, such as quantification, modeling, and uncertainty. This talk will use examples to discuss the best communication techniques from other fields and to suggest new areas of development.
