Keywords: career development, external visibility
Careers for researchers in statistics and data science are exciting and increasingly varied. There is no ‘one size fits all’ for statistical researchers in terms of choosing optimal career development opportunities. The specific career development choices one might make when pursuing a traditional academic career will likely differ from those made by someone in a tech start-up, for example. However, in all cases there are benefits from building visibility for one’s research - both internally within one’s home organizations as well as externally in the field. One must be cognizant of the environment in which one operates, recognizing opportunities and emerging trends and prepare accordingly. I will discuss these points and provide examples drawn from my experience as a researcher in a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research organization.
