Keywords: Optimisation, swimming relay selection

The objective of a four-person relay swimming team is to complete the race in minimum time within the rules of the event. Configurations of teams include all male, all female, or a mixture of male and female swimmers, who are then required to compete based on the definition of the event stroke, the distance and age categories. This paper presents an algorithmic solution to select the set of optimum relay teams based on the constraints of the events. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the team selection in a swimming club setting in South Africa.
