Bill Cleveland's Action Plan for Data Science (309876)

*David Donoho, Stanford University

About 20 years ago, Bill Cleveland put forward a visionary action plan for an as-yet unborn field he called 'Data Science'. Cleveland thought that the Statistics world (Statisticians, and their Institutions) should in the future work very differently than they had in the past.

Today we see that the Data Revolution and Digital Transformation are arguably the most potent forces at work in human societies. Various Data Science initiatives have taken place in academia, not always led by Statisticians.

The need for Cleveland's action plan is so clear in retrospect!

In this talk we compare Cleveland's vision with the ensuing revolutionary changes, and point to the triumphs and the missed opportunities in the past, and open questions for the future.
