Bill Cleveland’s Contributions to Methods for Analysis and Visualization of Large Complex Data (309871)

*Ryan Hafen, Preva Group

Keywords: big data, visualization

Bill Cleveland and John Tukey have produced an abundance of methods and practical guidance that have had a profound impact on how we analyze data. An underlying theme in many of the visual and analytical approaches is a willingness to look at the data in great detail. While most of these methods have focused on datasets of manageable size, more recently, Bill Cleveland has made many contributions that bring the same attitude of “deep analysis” to large complex datasets, with many ideas inspired by Tukey’s work. This talk delves into the history of Bill Cleveland’s methodological and computational contributions to this field, using the real-world “big data” applications and research programs that drove the research as a backdrop.
