How Usability and Reproducibility in Software Improves Teaching and Research (309853)

*Soren Harner, RC2AI

Keywords: R, Python, Julia, Notebooks, VegaLite, Tidyverse

Jim Harner devoted his life to teaching, research, and consulting in statistics, and later data science, ML, and Big Data. During this journey, he worked with many collaborators to develop software to assist in these areas. This culminated in the software development roadmap for RC2AI, which is applicable for data-heavy undergraduate courses while not sacrificing reproducibility or scalability for advanced users. In this talk, we examine how usability is achieved with an intelligent markdown notebook editor, which is optimized for small-screen devices like mobile devices and small laptops. We show how reproducibility enables collaboration in the classroom and among colleagues. Last, we present the RC2AI technology stack for reproducibility in the age of mobile and cloud computing, and show how it can scale from small datasets to petabyte data lakes and deep learning models with billions of parameters. Jim left the project with funding, and we are eager to find collaborators to carry it forward independently or to merge it into another project to achieve the greatest impact.
