VitalVis is a web-based visual analytics system for exploring multivariate time series data and associated temporal events at multiple levels of detail. The system was developed in collaboration with medical experts using a historical data set of patient vitals and metadata from surgeries. VitalVis provided medical experts and computer scientists with tools for understanding how variations in patient vitals affect drug and fluid administration and, conversely, how patients respond after drugs and fluids are administered. The system aided computer scientists in the development of predictive models and provided a platform for collaboration with medical experts during the exploratory stages of the project. Five main visualization techniques comprise the system, extending prior temporal and multivariate visual analytics approaches to a web-based implementation. The system also includes temporal visualization techniques. The main contributions of the current work include a web-based system for exploring multiple temporal variables with associated events using views that provide variable levels of detail and a practical application to health data science.
