Developing a High-School Data Science Course and Curriculum (309730)

*Daniel O'Loughlin, St. Paul Academy and Summit School

Keywords: High School curriculum, Data Science Course

Five years ago, I could not have given you an accurate definition of Data Science. Four years ago I attended a teaching-in-statistics conference where Data Science was the main topic of almost every talk. And now I am in the third year of teaching a two-semester sequence of Data Science courses for high school students, and my department is creating a Statistics/Data Science curriculum parallel to our Math curriculum within our Math Department. The changes are coming fast, and it can be difficult for high school teachers to keep up with the changes, but I will try to offer some insight into the process of moving from a curriculum with no Data Science courses to a full-fledged curriculum accessible to students with a variety of backgrounds.
