Teaching the Gestalt Principles to Help Undergraduate Students Design Effective Tables and Graphs (308348)

*Silas Bergen, Winona State University

Keywords: Education, data visualization, Gestalt principles

The ability to effectively communicate data insights is a crucial skill to teach data science and statistics undergraduates. In this talk I will discuss how teaching the Gestalt principles can give students a theoretical foundation for designing effective data summary media in both tabular and graphical forms. I will illustrate these ideas using a case study from a statistical consulting class and provide examples of student work.
