How (and Why) Election Results Data Gets Made (308077)

Presentation

*Derek Willis, OpenElections

Keywords: elections,data,visualization

This presentation walks through the process OpenElections uses to obtain and convert official precinct-level election results into data so that it may be used by reporters, researchers and academics who study elections. Many states and counties provide election results in non-electronic formats or as documents rather than data, requiring us to use a combination of programmatic and manual methods in order to make them into usable data. The presentation will show the conversion process for several states, discuss the role of data scientists in working with election data and demonstrate how OpenElections data has been used to help describe and explain election outcomes.
