We present a one-semester capstone course for majors in Statistical and Data Sciences (SDS) at Smith College. This experiential-based learning course leverages students’ previous coursework to address a real-world data science problem. Students collaborate in teams on research projects sponsored by academia, government, and/or industry that reinforce skills developed in the course of the SDS major. In addition, we develop professional skills surrounding ethics, project management, collaborative software development, documentation, and consulting.
