Tableau: Democratizing Visual Analytics by Automating Best Practices (306418)

*Anushka Anand, Tableau

Keywords: visual analytics, automatic data visualization

Tableau is based on the Polaris research project that extended the ideas in the Grammar of Graphics to multi-dimensional relational databases. The focus on interpreting data transformations as SQL queries allows the tool to be used by business users and analysts to ask questions of their data directly against a multitude of diverse data sources. Tableau applies findings from perception and visualization grammar research to automatically produce effective and expressive visualizations. In this talk, we will outline these applications of research and describe recent research initiatives to accelerate the journey to insight from data.
