Analysis of Traditional and Flipped Teaching in Elementary Statistics

In recent years, there have been several new teaching pedagogies used in teaching Elementary Statistics. Flipped Teaching is one of the new pedagogies used, and is defined by flippedlearning.org to be, "a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment". The purpose of our study is to investigate the effectiveness of flipped teaching compared to traditional teaching in Elementary Statistics. The data comes from seven Elementary Statistics classes taught at Slippery Rock University. Three of the classes were taught as traditional and the remaining classes were taught as flipped. All classes were taught by the same instructor. Descriptive and Inferential analysis were conducted to compare the two teaching methods. Statistical models were adjusted for sex, semester, class size, and year in college. Results indicate that the students from the traditional teaching performed better in our sample. Potential reasons for our results will be discussed and this information will contribute to teaching college Elementary Statistics.
