Keeping the Statistician in Statistics Education: Discussion from the Session-The New Face of Statistics Education

Sponsor: Section on Statistical Education

Jennifer E. Broatch

Arizona State University

Session: Within society, statistics education is often equated with introductory statistics. However, advances in our discipline and societal needs necessitate that our definition of statistics education evolve to encompass multiple aspects of education and research. This panel of speakers will discuss the changing landscape for statistics education over time and the impact it has on statistics classrooms, major programs of study at the undergraduate and graduate level, and research. The International Year of Statistics is not only a time to celebrate past accomplishments and advances, but also a time to reflect on how our discipline can continue to grow.

Paper: The addition of statistics to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has brought statistics education from an exclusively university level discipline into the more broad K-12 system. Statistics is no longer isolated in the university, rather it has been catapulted to the national education spotlight. There is a growing audience for statistics and it is imperative to define "statistics education" in a way that is consistent with the goals of the field without compromising the discipline of statistics.
