Leadership Development for Statisticians, Data Scientists and Programmers
Section for Statistical Programmers and Analysts co: Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science
About this session
Statistical leadership can be defined as the ability to deliver value to your organization by persuading others to act on your ideas. For statisticians, this entails a transition from being a consultant/analyst to a collaborator/leader. It means going from simply responding to requests to identifying and driving opportunities to make your organization more efficient, effective, and/or profitable. So what does it take to make this transition? It requires a shift in mindset from focusing primarily on mastering technical skills to developing influence skills that most statisticians do not learn in their graduate training and take years, if not decades, to master.
This course focuses on providing training in the skills that underly that ability to influence. These skills include persuasive communication, building trust, improving business/organizational acumen, and an understanding of how to drive change. The course leverages exercises, examples, discussion, lectures and individual reflection to understand these skills and how they work together to ultimately drive change and deliver value. The participants will also receive guidance on creating a plan to continue their development and application of skills after the training.
