The Past, Present, and Future of ggplot2 Extension Packages

The ggplot2 package has fundamentally transformed data visualization in R by giving users the tools to create customized graphs according to a consistent underlying grammar. Furthermore, ggplot2 was intentionally designed to give outside developers the capability of adding on to ggplot2's core functionality through extension packages. As a result a rich ecosystem of additional packages has emerged that extend ggplot2 in both expected and unexpected ways.
