CE_25C: Programming for Data Science (Added Fee)

Data science has evolved a lot in the past ten years where computer science and statistics converge. As statisticians, we are trained to understand the data using statistical/mathematical models. However, data scientists could spend upwards of 80% of the effort on pulling, organizing, and cleaning data which requires a basic understanding of databases. Additionally, machine learning positions are focusing more and more on software engineering and less on math and theory. Many data science interviews include algorithms, data structures, and databases which are not covered in typical statistics curriculum. We will discuss how data science has changed in the past ten years, how working in the industry differs from academia, and explain the data science interview process. The course will also cover the engineering aspects. Participants will learn the programming fundamentals required for a career in data science which are often seen in data science/machine learning interviews. The course will be in SQL and Python.
