The ASA History of Statistics Special Interest Group organised a memorial session at the Joint Statistical Meetings, Washington DC. The speakers were Nancy Reid, Peter McCullagh and Heather Battey, and the present note is a transcript of my lecture. The abstract for the talk appeared in the conference program as follows: D. R. Cox (David) was engaged and energetic in research to the very end. I will speak about aspects of his intellect and character, as I perceived them during the happy years we worked together. Some anecdotes will be used in illustration.
