Abstract:

Staff statisticians are important independent contributors and play critical supporting roles in multidisciplinary research in academic settings. Therefore, their career development is also key to the continued success of many research and developmental projects. An open and transparent discussion is needed on the barriers to promotion along with a discussion of the ways to advance promotion for staff statisticians.

Members of the Pathways to Promotion Committee of the ASA Statistical Consulting Section will lead a discussion on potential challenges and possible solutions. The discussion will be an opportunity for staff statisticians and their supervisors to share views on the opportunities and barriers to retention and promotion. By the end of the session, we hope to identify how best to recognize and support the professional development needs of staff statisticians.

Possible questions to be discussed include: How should staff statisticians be evaluated? How do we retain staff statisticians, from the employer and employee’s perspective? What timing and goals are attainable for promotion? If there is not a clear promotion pathway, who can you talk to, and what can you do?
