Abstract:

Recent advances in mobile health (mHealth) technology has expanded a market for digital health and greatly contributed to the ubiquity of smartphones and wearable devices. mHealth technology has the potential of revolutionizing clinical interventions as they can record data at the patient’s natural environment both via active input from users (EMA) and passive recording of data generated from device sensors. However, the data generated via mHealth technologies are highly complex particularly because it is multimodal, temporal and noisy. As the statistical and biostatistical community engage in the design and analysis of clinical studies involving mHealth technology, it is increasingly important to understand the limitations and challenges of such data. In this roundtable discussion, we will discuss the major challenges in the design and analysis of mHealth data, discuss appropriate use of existing statistical methodology and identify areas that need new methodological development.
