Negotiation skills are essential for statisticians in every job sector. However, most people do not receive training or practice in negotiation as part of their formal education. As a result, many statisticians enter negotiations unprepared. Job seekers negotiate starting salary, job roles and duties, resources, and benefits, which all can have lasting impacts on long term success and satisfaction. Negotiation skills also help statisticians achieve promotions or more favorable job roles and conditions, in addition to promoting healthy collaborative relationships. In this roundtable members of the Pathways to Promotion Committee of the ASA Statistical Consulting Section will discuss strategies to improve negotiation skills, prepare for negotiations, and assess your own goals during negotiations. We will introduce participants to a framework focusing on “principled” negotiation: 1) Separating the people from the problem; 2) Focusing on interests, not positions; 3) Generating a variety of options before deciding; 4) Working towards results based on objective standards or criteria. We will also provide a list of recommended resources for sound advice on improving negotiation skills.
