Title: The Shapes of Winning Percentage Distributions in the Four American Sports

Keywords: Shapes of Distributions; Team Winning Percentages; Tests of Goodness of Fit; MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL
Abstract:

What sort of winning percentages are generated, year-by year, in the team play of the MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL? Histograms of each year’s team winning percentages are drawn and the set of yearly percentages are used to find the parameters of the best fits using the R-routine. Bell, skewed, bi-modal, multi-modal, and uniform distribution shapes are fit for every one of 40 seasons. The primary question is whether one shape tends to occur the most and whether the most common shape differs from sport to sport. How the shapes transition from one year to another Is also studied. Finally, we explore what happens when a decade’s worth of winning percentages is collected in each sport. We study if this shape varies from sport to sport or if this shape relates to the year-by-year results.
