Abstract #322519
Title: Three Cognitive Science Principles Every Stats Teacher Should Know
Author(s): Ross Metusalem*
Companies: JMP Statistical Discovery
Keywords: Education; Teaching
Abstract:

As in many domains, education practice in statistics and other disciplines is becoming increasingly evidence-based. This trend is driving incorporation of cognitive science research findings into teaching and learning practices. In fact, major education companies currently employ teams of cognitive scientists to help build their products and services according to decades of experimental findings. While this is a welcome development, the biggest impact on student learning will come from teachers’ targeted application of cognitive science in their own classrooms. This breakout will review three cognitive science principles and their real-world application to teaching: activating students' prior knowledge, managing cognitive load, and practicing memory retrieval. Attendees will build knowledge of core principles of cognition that they can start applying right away to further the use of evidence-based teaching practices in our increasingly evidence-based world.
