Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) holds a men’s swim championship every middle to late February to conclude the swim sand dive season. After the 2020 KSHSAA men’s swim championship, the coronavirus spread across the world impacting swimmers and the lives of many. Pools were closed until June 2020, and when they reopened there were lane and number of swimmer restrictions. The null hypothesis states that COVID-19 has no impact on championship times. Did COVID-19 impact the winning championship time for men? This can be assessed by comparing the eight individual and three relay winning times from the 2020 and 2021 season for class 6A. I performed a basic sign test to determine if the number of events that had slower times in 2021 were significantly different than what we expect due to chance. The data ended up with five events having worse times and 6 events having better times, resulting in a p-value of 0.7257. Thus, you cannot conclude that covid negatively impacted the winning times between 2020 and 2021.
