Weather plays an important role in traffic accidents for human drivers: road conditions can deteriorate, drivers’ capabilities will be affected as visibility decreases, and vehicle performance could worsen. At Waymo, we are building rigorous and innovative autonomous driving technology to save lives and improve mobility for all, and safety under various weather conditions is one of the crucial focus areas. In this talk, I will introduce how Waymo tackles the weather question, from the challenging data collection problems to safety assessment and decision making based on the complex data, and the role a data scientist plays in improving the technology of autonomous driving with safety under all conditions as the top priority.
