Author(s): Laura Freeman*
Companies: Virginia Tech
Keywords: artificial intelligence; machine learning; statistical thinking; statistics education; experimental methods
Abstract:

New developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have received widespread attention by academia, industry, government, and even popular media. DARPA has termed the current wave of AI "statistical learning" based AI. However, publications have been dominated by academic communities outside of statistics. In this roundtable we will discuss the role of the statistics profession in the current wave of AI. Topics will include how statistical thinking can advance the current state-of-the-art, contributions that statistical engineering can play in achieving assured AI (trustworthy, fair, secure, reliable, etc.), and implications for educating the next generation of professional statisticians.
