Abstract:

Each year, over a million lives are lost in traffic accidents worldwide, many involving human error or poor judgment. One avenue for improving the safety of our roads is through the adoption of autonomously driven vehicles. This is our goal at Waymo, where we’re building the World’s Most Experienced Driver (TM). The development of autonomous vehicles provides a wide array of data science challenges, including safety assessments, evaluation of onboard decision-making for the car, and understanding the satisfaction of our riders. In this talk, I will outline complex on-road scenarios and the role a statistician can play in improving the autonomous vehicle’s behavior in these settings.
