Abstract #322046
Title: Statisticians on Social Media: Find Your Voice, Build Your Network
Author(s): Natalie Dean*
Companies: Emory University
Keywords: social media; public engagement; science communication
Abstract:

If you think that social media is only for sharing vacation photos and memes, think again. Scientists are flocking to sites like Twitter to access the latest research findings and to network with colleagues. In addition to being a place to learn, scientists can share content and develop their individual voice. As one’s following grows, a scientist can reach colleagues in other fields or applied sectors, and even journalists, policy-makers, and the general public. In the age of “altmetrics,” consider how social media can help you increase the impact and influence of your work. During this roundtable, we will discuss: the potential value of social media, types of engagement strategies, developing your content, and navigating pitfalls. We will talk about how an online presence – be it through Twitter, a blog, a YouTube channel, a personal website, or more – can be part of your broader portfolio, translate into new professional opportunities, and increase the accessibility of science. Come ready to share your experiences, learn from your peers, and imagine the type of content you want to share with your community!
