Abstract:
|
The term data science has become ubiquitous in the statistical community. Innovation from traditional statistics and advancements in statistical computing have allowed data science to blossom. Numerous industry and government organizations label their statistically intensive positions as data scientists. Recently a membership survey from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) has reported that growth in machine learning and data science is a top desire. Likely this desire is not unique to the IMS but is the case in virtually all statistics organizations. Statistical organizations primarily refers to professional societies, but the discussion may extend to academic departments and groups in industry and government as well. This panel first strives to understand what data science is? Then asks how should statistical organizations adapt to embrace data science.
