Keywords: communication; data visualization; pedagogy
Abstract:

Data Space is a repository of interdisciplinary stories and data journalism pieces that incorporate interactive apps and pedagogical tools that allows students to explore, simulate and modify data from published research. It is designed to bring disciplines together by combining aspects of data analysis, storytelling and social justice. By incorporating Data Space into the classroom, students can use guided questions to discuss the importance of databased decision that are currently influencing our society. Shiny apps allow students to create models and graphs that reflect each researchers’ viewpoint as well as explore other perspectives not directly examined in the story. Additional open-ended questions encourage students to use freely available data to find their own perspectives and communicate their results with a broader audience.
