Abstract:
|
The Canadian statistical community is spread across a large geography with significant heterogeneity in institution and home department. Frequently, local groups of statisticians are small and physically isolated. This environment raises challenges for disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration. Those challenges are tackled by the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI). CANSSI is Canada’s catalyst for discovery and innovation in statistical sciences and for advances in collaborative research and training. CANSSI’s programs encourage the inclusion of statistical scientists as core members of interdisciplinary teams leading to genuine collaboration and co-creation of scientific discovery across disciplines. From the early focus on the wildly success Collaborative Research Team program, CANSSI has grown to offer a range of programs that encourage and support collaborative research. We describe the process by which programs are introduced and evolved. We also discuss the foundational role of the issues of equity, diversity and inclusion. Our thesis is that CANSSI should be a model for public institutional support for statistical sciences in any country.
