The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) relies on several external advisory committees, the two most influential of which are the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) and the Science Advisory Board (SAB). In addition, a committee formed by the National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) is currently preparing a report on Assessing Causality from a Multidisciplinary Evidence Base for National Ambient Air Quality Standards, sponsored by the EPA. Following a reorganization of EPA's advisory committees in 2021, statisticians and researchers who make extensive use of statistics are currently in key positions on each of these committees. This therefore seems an excellent opportunity to review the role that statistics and statisticians play in helping the EPA formulate scientific and policy decisions, and to suggest ways that statisticians could continue to play an active role in the future. The current panel is drawn from the members of these three committees, will review the functions of the committees themselves as well as giving their personal experiences working with the committees.
