Howard Wainer is a consummate statistician, approaching every phenomenon with an eye toward not only extracting the information in a meaningful, valid and efficient way, but presenting it so that it is both graphically and verbally appealing. My early encounters with Howard at the pool in Princeton resulted in a joint paper on what might constitute a fair triathlon (Chance 1995). Since then, it has informed my research into what might constitute a fair athletic event if all genders and ages are to have a fair chance of winning. The Dipsea foot race in Calfornia is one of the few such events that handicaps by age and gender. We'll examine some models of human performance in various sports and see how well their handicap method works.
