Abstract:
|
Statistics is the quintessential transdisciplinary science. It bridges scientific disciplines and provides a common language for synthesizing data and sharing results. We are responsible for incorporating ethical thinking into our research and innovation. The role of ethics in statistics is to enable relative evaluation and resolution of equipoise (balance of forces or interests) to inform decisions promoting the good of communities. This session includes thought leaders from many fields to discuss ethics tools and concepts. The panelists will describe how they innovate using an ethical lens. How do they decide what ethical statistical science should look like, i.e., does it produce beneficial knowledge? What frameworks, questions, and principles guide their work; how do they apply them? What challenges do they face; how do they overcome them? How do they communicate their planning and conduct of ethical research? The American Statistical Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics completed the quinquennial update of its Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice. The ASA COPE chair (Jing Cao) will discuss these changes and their application to research and innovation.
