Abstract:

Virtually every aspect of U.S. society faces questions with important implications for our economy, health, security, prosperity, happiness, and future. Statistical data created by various levels of government can play a key part, either directly or indirectly, in understanding such complex questions. Statisticians and data scientists have a critical role in making sound and efficient use of official statistics, often in combination with alternate data sources, to further our understanding. This panel of experts, identified by the ASA Links Lecture Award Committee, will draw on their individual contributions and visions to discuss innovations that can further advance the role of official statistics in addressing critical data needs. Panelists will give an overview of their contributions and future vision. The remaining time will be a structured discussion on innovations to address existing challenges. The Links Lecture Award honors those who advance official statistics through the statistical use of administrative and alternative data sources, record linkage, blended estimates, or addressing privacy, confidentiality, researcher access, and reproducibility of results.
