Perhaps because many disabilities are not immediately apparent, disability and accessibility are often left off the table in conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Universal design encourages us to thoughtfully design environments to be usable to a wide audience, including people with disabilities. Proactively preparing for the participation of people with disabilities in your department can minimize the need for accommodations from faculty, staff, and students with disabilities and make the department more welcoming and inclusive. Departments that consider the diverse needs of their constituents when shaping policies, facilities, information technology, instruction, and meetings and events. This presentation will encourage participants to consider ways they are already making their department more accessible, next steps they can take, and longer-term strategies.
