Abstract:

In this talk, I will focus on Ken Brewer’s contributions to collocated sampling. Collocated sampling is a procedure that associates a unique permanent random number with every unit on a given Register. Collocated sampling allows controlling sample rotation within repeated stratified surveys, as well as the overlap of sampled units between different surveys.

Ken Brewer's research on this topic has been significant for two reasons. In terms of theory, it has led to further research in this area. In terms of practice, it has led to the development of a sampling system at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in the early 80's. It has allowed the ABS to select samples for any of their Business surveys. Later on, further research on the topic by other agencies and universities has led to the development of systems with more options.
