Abstract:

With the emergence of data science and its popularity, there is a high demand for well-trained data scientists. However, the traditional statistics, mathematics, and computer science programs are not fully prepared to meet this demand. In this panel, we will discuss differences and similarities across institutions in developing cross-disciplinary data science curricula, research opportunities, and career preparation programs. We will share our experiences of creating pathways from community colleges to four-year institutions, from four-year institutions to graduate school, and from higher ed institutions to industry. The panelists include principal investigators from three separate NSF-funded projects aimed at advancing data science education across different types of institutions and providing real-life data experiences to learners.
