Abstract:

Applications of MSE to human rights include estimation of the number of deaths in a conflict and estimation of the number of victims of human trafficking. In this talk I’ll discuss two challenges that arise in the application of multiple systems estimation (MSE) to human rights. The first is heterogeneity in the visibility of different members of the population to the sampling mechanism. The second is making valid statistical inferences after model selection in Poisson regression. I’ll present one methodological solution to the former. For the latter, I will describe and illustrate the problem and how it arises, then describe some early steps toward a solution.
