Abstract:

Data Challenges allow entities such as government agencies to encourage researchers across the nation to solve important real-world problems. By crowdsourcing and leveraging the variety of participants, these data competitions provide a unique opportunity to explore what is possible from the data. This talk will discuss the organization and selection process for creating a data challenge such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 500 Cities Data Challenge, a $1 million grant initiative that called for applications to design creative solutions from the 500 Cities Project that would address several social factors.
