Typical foundations in the field of statistics include the best approaches for collecting data, inferring information about populations when using data drawn from samples, and how to quantify uncertainty. In professional sport, such principles are easy to disregard. We'll walk through several examples of how statistics has been used to help the National Football League use data to better understand its on-field product by using research projects involving game, play-level, and player tracking data.
