Abstract:

Control charts are powerful tools used by many industries to monitor the quality of processes and detect special cause of variations. Modified and the Acceptance Control Charts are important tools to monitor the process mean with respect to the capability of the processes. To design these charts, usually, the in-control process standard deviation must be estimated from reference samples. In 2019, we showed that this estimation has a negative impact on the performance of the Modified and the Acceptance charts. This means that the In-control Average Run Length (the most used performance measure of a control chart) may be much different from what is nominally expected. In this paper, we provide some solutions to this negative impact. This solution corresponds to adjustments on the Control Limits which guarantee with a large probability that the In-control Average Run Length is larger than some desired value. This is also known as the Exceedance Probability Criterion.
