Abstract:

We present data from a large naturalistic driving study involving truck drivers from a nationwide transportation company. Regarding the question of whether safety critical events, such as hard breaks or lane departures, are related to the likelihood of a crash, we find that there is a moderate and highly statistically significant correlation. We then investigate the factors that affect the occurrence of safety critical events, including cumulative driving time, time of day, and weather.
