Abstract:

Four sources of data on natural resources and agriculture are (1) the National Resources Inventory (NRI), (2) the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP), (3) the NRCS Soil Survey, and (4) the Cropland Data Layer (CDL). The NRI is a longitudinal survey that collects information through interpretation of aerial photographs of a probability sample of segments. CEAP gathers more detailed information for a subset of NRI locations. The NRI and CEAP surveys are important sources of information on soil loss due to water and wind erosion. Small area estimation and spatial visualization of erosion data benefit from integration of population-level data sources related to the erosion variables of interest. Two characteristics related to erosion are soil properties and the land cover. The NRCS Soil Survey is an administrative database with information about soil characteristics. The CDL is a land-cover classification based on satellite imagery. Using statistical models, we integrate the CDL and NRCS Soil Survey with data from the NRI and CEAP surveys for the purposes of small area prediction and visualization.
