Abstract:
|
Catch estimates in 2003-2018 from the Hawaii Marine Recreational Fishing Survey (HMRFS) were evaluated to obtain non-commercial catch weight estimates of uku in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Uku is a reef-associated snapper and a member of the MHI bottomfish complex. Current HMRFS excludes full-time commercial fishers for recreational catch estimation. However, it does not distinguish between catch to be sold versus catch not for sale from recreational expense fishers (who sometimes sell fish to help cover fishing expenses) or part-time commercial fishers. In order to provide a non-commercial (not sold) catch estimate, the HMRFS catch estimate was adjusted by excluding the proportion of catch claimed to be sold by surveyed fishers. An overall mean weight (based on weight measurements of uku in 2003-2018) was used to estimate catch weights from annual catch number estimates. The non-commercial catch weight estimates were equal to or larger than reported catch from the mandatory commercial fishing reports in 2003-2018. This combination of non-commercial and commercial catch has been used in order to obtain total fish removal in an ongoing stock assessment of the uku snapper.
