Abstract:

The R programming community has an underrepresentation of Latin American (LatAm) developers. Starting in 2010, the International Bioinformatics Workshops have been held at the Center for Genomic Sciences, UNAM, Mexico. Among the workshops taught, an “Introduction to R and RStudio” has become a staple that trains new R users. However, the transition from R user to developer is complex. To facilitate this transition, we created the Community of Bioinformatics Software Developers (CDSB) in 2018 that designs yearly advanced workshops that help users gain the skills needed to become R developers. CDSB2018 featured Bioconductor members as instructors, while CDSB2019 consisted of a Spanish translation of the Building Tidy Tools workshop from Charlotte and Hadley Wickham as well as activities designed by rOpenSci, resulting in 4 new R packages. Through CDSB, we helped LatAm users during the BioC2019 travel scholarship process, where 3 CDSB members presented their R packages at this US conference. At CDSB comunidadbioinfo.github.io, we are building a new wave of R developers, with the support of the R Consortium, among other sponsors that could be replicated elsewhere in LatAm and beyond.
