Abstract:
|
The Quarterly Services Survey (QSS) is a principal economic indicator that produces national quarterly revenue estimates for employer establishments in selected service industries. The QSS began publishing not-seasonally-adjusted estimates in 2004 and introduced seasonally adjusted estimates in the fourth quarter of 2008. With its fourth quarter 2018 release, the QSS expanded the number of seasonally adjusted series from 12 to 38 – the first introduction of new seasonal series in six years. The QSS continues to research the quality of seasonal adjustment for additional series using X-13ARIMA-SEATS, with plans to expand to additional sectors. This paper discusses the phased, sector-based approach to expansion and the challenges that arise when adjusting short series and series with different spans.
