Abstract:
|
In recent years climate change has become a key political issue and the subject of frequent debate in the United States. However, the percentage of Americans who believe that climate change is a growing threat varies based on location. We will examine fluctuations in temperature using measurements from weather stations throughout the country provided by The Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN). We will focus first on spatial patterns in the data to determine if there are certain regions of the county experiencing more significant negative changes in climate than others. We will then explore whether public opinion regarding climate change is related to the amount of change experienced by that area over the last 120 years using data from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. Our goal is to evaluate whether public perception of climate change is related to the realities of climate change in a given area.
