Abstract:

As the global warming problem becomes more and more serious, the agriculture conditions shift more severely and rapidly in recent years. Farming conditions in the United States are important for the country’s food supply and economic growth. Thus, our project aims at analyzing how Hardiness Zones are changing in United States counties using climate data from NOAA given. Hardiness zones will be measured using USDA standards for farmers to know which plants are the best to select for their locations. We calculate the zone’s category based on the annual extreme minimum temperature average in different 30-year periods for each county given stations’ locations and visualize the changing maps over time. This project hopes to produce the most recent map and predicted maps of US Hardiness Zones. Then, we look for the trends and direction of changing zones on the US map. Furthermore, we will investigate the relationship between temperature change and zones’ change closely in this analysis.
