Abstract:

Past research exists on instructor misbehaviors that possess pedagogical value and show that misbehaviors have negative effects on student learning. This study expands on Goodboy's 2015 study on undergraduate students and explores student perceptions of instructor misbehaviors in graduate level courses to examine the following questions: Do graduate students perceive instructor misbehaviors the same as undergraduate students? Do students perceive instructor misbehaviors to occur in graduate level courses? Do demographic group differences exist in the perception of misbehaviors? Pilot study results suggest that graduate students don't perceive instructor misbehaviors in the same way as undergraduate students, the items load differently onto a different factor structure; students do not perceive instructor misbehaviors to occur frequently in graduate level courses; attitudes towards instructor misbehaviors do not appear to differ based on gender, graduate level, or race/ ethnicity. The results suggest that other misbehaviors are occurring. These findings call for a revised instrument and administration for further study, which are currently ongoing and conclusions will be discussed.
